On Combining Art and Science
Our world is rapidly changing due to globalization, new technologies and an evolving culture. The demands of 21st Century learning call for an increase in interpersonal skills, digital literacy, problem solving, creativity and innovation. In addition, there remains a need for strong content knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge in various settings and across disciplines. There is growing evidence that the addition of Art to the STEM fields (STEAM) will help to cultivate these much needed skills and serve to deepen students’ understanding of a subject. Einstein recognized this and stated, “...Science and Art tend to coalesce in aesthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientists are always artists as well.”
Video is a powerful medium that allows you to tell a story and use images to convey an idea in a memorable way. I chose to personify Art and Science to show what they could be separately vs. united. To make the movie, I used Windows Movie Maker to blend my original script with images, video and music found under the Creative Commons License. In order to save time when creating the video or listing author credits, you should save potential media under categories like a scene or a specific character. Create a document with links to the original page for each photo rather than just saving the image URL since it does not give you author information. For videos and music, save links to the original page along with the title of the piece and the creator's name.
